Aristeidis Katsanos

In recognition of his contributions to stroke research, Scientist Aristeidis Katsanos has been awarded the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) Michael S. Pessin Stroke Leadership Prize.

Katsanos received the award at the 2025 AAN Annual Meeting, held April 5–9 in Chicago, USA, where he presented on the use of colchicine for stroke prevention and shared updates from the CoVasc-ICH and CoVasc-ICH 2 trials. The Pessin Prize recognizes emerging neurologists who have a strong interest in and have demonstrated a passion for learning and expanding the field of stroke research.

Katsanos’ research focuses on emerging applications of neurosonology and the evidence-based evaluation of novel therapies for acute stroke treatment and secondary stroke prevention. He is co-principal investigator of several randomized controlled trials, including DETECT, which studies optimal blood pressure control after endovascular thrombectomy, and CoVasc-ICH, which explores the use of colchicine to prevent vascular events following acute intracerebral hemorrhage.

His work has been recognized with several awards, including the Young Investigator Award from the European Stroke Organisation, the New Investigator Award from the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada, and the EJ Moran Campbell Award from the Department of Medicine at McMaster University. He also serves as an Academic Editor for PLOS One, Associate Editor for Frontiers in Neurology, and Assistant Editor for Stroke.
