PHRI Associate Senior Scientist Deborah Siegal received the 2024 Canadian Hematology Society (CHS) Paper of the Year for the “Small-Volume Blood Collection Tubes to Reduce Transfusions in Intensive Care: The STRATUS Randomized Clinical Trial.”
The award was presented at the CHS Awards Reception on December 8, where Siegal, principal investigator of the study, gave a brief presentation on the STRATUS study, published in JAMA in November 2023. The study, which involved over 27,000 patients across 25 adult ICUs in Canada, found that using small-volume blood collection tubes for lab tests reduced the need for nearly one blood transfusion for every 10 patients.
The CHS Paper of the Year Award is an annual recognition given to the best hematology paper published in Canada during the preceding year.
Congratulations to Siegal and the STRATUS study team!
