PVC-RAM-3 is a multicentre, parallel group, superiority, randomized controlled trial to determine the effect of virtual care with remote automated monitoring (RAM) technology, compared to standard care on acute hospital care and index hospital length of stay in adults who have undergone elective non-cardiac surgery.

Patients in the experimental group will receive a tablet computer and RAM technology, which measures blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen saturation, temperature, and weight.

For 14 days, patients will perform daily biophysical measurements and complete a recovery survey, and nurses will review these results. Patients will also take wound photographs for the first 7 days and interact with nurses and physicians virtually throughout the duration of the program.

In the standard-care group, patients received post-hospital discharge management according to their centre’s usual care.

Primary outcomes: Acute-hospital care (ED visit, urgent care centre visit, hospital readmission) and index hospital length of stay,

Secondary outcomes:

  • Hospital re-admission
  • Emergency department visit
  • Detection and correction of medication errors
  • Surgical site infection
  • Days in hospital
  • Pain at 15 and 30 days after randomization
  • Medication optimization for long term health

In PVC-RAM-3, patients are randomized before surgery (versus at discharge in PVC-RAM-1).
