Two PHRI researchers were among the recipients of the Heart & Stroke Foundation New Investigator Award 2024/2025.

Raed Joundi

Investigator Raed Joundi was recognized with the New Investigator Award for his research program “Unraveling the key determinants of post-stroke cognitive impairment and dementia”, which includes the PROSPECT study.  He was additionally honoured with the Henry J.M. Barnett Scholarship, which is awarded to a highly rated New Investigator working in stroke or a related field.

“I am grateful to Heart & Stroke Foundation for the New Investigator Award. This will support me to pursue an ambitious research program, including retrospective and prospective studies, in identifying the determinants of cognitive decline and dementia after stroke (such as socioeconomic status, clinical factors, treatments, and biomarkers)” said Joundi.

“We hope this research will catalyze the development of new strategies or therapeutics to prevent or reduce cognitive impairment and dementia after stroke.”

William McIntyre

Scientist William McIntyre was also recognized for his research on “Improving Outcomes for Patients with Post-Operative Atrial Fibrillation After Cardiac Surgery.” This research includes the START-POAF and VISION Cardiac Surgery studies.

I’m grateful for the support of the Heart & Stroke Foundation. Atrial fibrillation is the most common complication of cardiac surgery, affecting 1 in 3 patients who have surgery,” said McIntyre.

“This award allows me to focus my time in the PHRI Arrhythmia and Peri-op programs as we work to prevent this complication and improve treatment and follow up for the patients who do develop it.”
